Since human appearance architectural history, the appraisal and strengthening of an existingbuilding had been regarded as an ancient and traditional academic. But in terms of its essential, itcan only be regarded as a new subject. Due to the rapid development of construction industry andmodern science, this new subject also develop extremely rapid.Currently the appraisal and strengthening of an existing building faces following limits: thefurther improvement of identify technology; unable to a quantitative index to evaluate the existingbuildings; unable to satisfy the expected service life of client; the strengthening scheme didn’tfully compare the demanding with economic nor make any optimization. As to solve mentionproblems, this paper states a commercial building in actual project as an example, with asequence of in situ detection of structuralâ†'structural capacity analysisâ†'structural reliabilityappraisalâ†'remained service life and durability grade assessmentâ†'selection ofstrengthening proposal. The research are including the following content as:1, According to the actual situation and appraisal purpose, utilize a variety of advancedequipment and testing instrument, to obtain each parameters which is necessary for the concretestructural appraisal, analysis and amendment of collected data, so as to provide the evidence forappraisal.2, Base on the original design documents, compare with the in situ test data, build up acomputational model which is in accordance with realistic stress of existing structural, thenprocess with structural analysis, and obtain a relationship between force and resistance.3, Carry out the reliability assessment according to the <Standard for appraiser of reliabilityof civil buildings>(GB50292-1999), including the rating of structural safety and normal serviceassessment.4, Against the flaw in reliability assessment, estimate the remained service life and ratedurability according to <Standard for durability assessment of concrete structures>(CECS220:2007).5, Compare with the reliability appraisal, remained service life and durability assessment, and list the most economic strengthening proposal for differ expected service life.According to the study above, with assessment the structural reliability and remained servicelife, compare with differ expected service life, we can make an optimization of strengtheningproposal, save the costing significant, and obtain a substantial economic result.
