Hainan, as the only tropical island province in China, is evolving into a worldclass resorts for leisure and holiday in recent years, and coastal resort hotels are alsodeveloping well. Natural ventilation is widely present in Hainan hotel building, especially in the public space of building. It not only reduces the energy consumptionof air conditioning, but also increases architectural aesthetics and improves humancomfort. At present, there is no systematic study in our country on natural ventilationstrategies and thermal comfort of tropical island region, such as on the terrainenvironment, architectural layout, landscape vegetation effect and thermal comfortcharacteristics, etc.Firstly, the natural ventilation in the semi-open building space of Tropical Islandwas studied. Ten consecutive days test on natural ventilation was conducted in thelobby of Narada Resort, and the temperature and wind speed distribution wereanalyzed. Then the natural ventilation of the hotel lobby was simulated with CFDsoftware and the natural ventilation of different prevailing wind direction and windspeed in summer was compared and analyzed. And semi-open buildings of differentbuilding layout and the layout of courtyard were also simulated and studied. Thestudy found that natural ventilation could lower the temperature of semi-open lobbyeffectively and the natural ventilation of field test hotel lobby was especially betterunder south and south-west wind in summer; the natural ventilation air distribution ofH-model layout was better under summer dominant south wind and the courtyard wasnot good for the wind pressure dominated natural ventilation of semi-open building.Secondly, the thermal comfort of natural ventilation in the semi-open building ofTropical Island was studied. The research was based on the thermal comfortquestionnaires of people and the thermal comfort parameters test of the environmentin semi-open lobby of ten starred hotels. Through analyzing the thermal comfortquestionnaire, the acceptable thermal comfort temperature in summer was30.6°C inthe semi-open space with natural ventilation; there were significant differences inthermal comfort between local residents and tourists and different genders, and localresidents were more sensitive to the air temperature considering wind speed compensation than tourists. In this paper, field test and CFD simulation were both used to study the naturalventilation in the semi-open building space of Tropical Island and the method ofquestionnaire was adopted for the study of thermal comfort at the same time, whichhave a certain reference value for naturally ventilated design of tropical island regionsbuilding.
