Cable supported structure is a new type of prestressed steel structure rising inrecent years, which has been widely used in the convention and exhibition centers,large stadiums, airport terminals, industry plants, etc. With more and more widelyapplication and the in-depth study of cable supported structure, many problems areexposed. The prestressed cable is one of the most important component in the cablesupported structure and the main cable project is made of steel, including steel wirerope, steel wire, steel beam and steel rod. While, poor corrosion resistance, lowspecific strength, temperature instability and other defects lead to the structurecollapse and cable replacement during service. In addition, dead weight of the steelcable is relatively large, which leads to excessive weight and affects the structurespanning ability. Therefore, in order to solve these problems fundamentally, the bestway is to use the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) which has good corrosionresistance, low density and high performance.Based on the existed theory, CFRP cable supported structure system is presented inthis paper. In this structural system, CFRP cable replaces the steel cable to support thestructure. Based on some practical project and using finite element method, this paperstudies performance of those two structural models——steel cable supported structureand CFRP cable supported structure. The study includes static analysis, stabilityanalysis, temperature effect analysis, and wind-induced dynamic response analysis.Through the research we conclude that:(1)We can obtain that under the same conditions, such as axial force, inclinationangle and length, the sag of CFRP cable is only1/5that of steel cable. Throughcomparision of elastic modulus loss between steel cable and CFRP cable underdifferent length and stress, we find the loss of CFRP cable is much less than steelcable. As we all know, the sag of cable under dead weight can decrease the loadtransfer and bearing efficiency. But the simulation can prove that CFRP cableovercomes this weakness. The CFRP cable deforms little due to dead weight and theoriginal axis of which stays the same. Besides the load transfer and bearing efficiencywill not decrease over time.(2)Under the same static load condition, the internal force of superstructure inCFRP cable support structure is3-4MPa higher than that of superstructure in steel cable support structure, but cable stress of CFRP cable is25MPa lower than that ofsteel cable.(3)The temperature effect of CFRP cable supported structure is less than that ofsteel cable supported structure.(4) Stability capacity of of CFRP cable supported structure is higher than that ofsteel cable supported structure.(5)The wind responses of these two structures are basically the same, but thedisplacement of CFRP cable supported structure is bigger than that of steel cablesupported structure.
