With the economic and cultural development of society and people’s growing livingstandards, people’s requirements for environment of living districts are also increasing. Facingpressures from all sides in life and work, urban residents need to relax physically and mentally, and improve physical health, associate with neighbors in appropriate recreational activities. Therefore, it has been gradually paid more attention to how to design residential recreationalfacilities reasonably. From the aspects of relationship between residential recreationalfacilities and the environment, residential recreational facilities design was studied. This paper analyzed the current development of construction of recreational facilities inlandscape designs of urban residential districts and the importance of studies of relationshipbetween current construction of recreational facilities and their environment in urbanresidential areas. Then we described the definition of residential recreational facilities and theenvironment, introduced utility and current studies of urban residential recreational facilitiesat home and abroad. We analyzed classification of urban residential recreational facilities, characterization of recreational activities in residential districts, and the requirements ofrecreational facilities by different groups. We also summarized design principles ofrecreational facilities in urban residential areas. Based on the theoretical studies ofconstruction of urban residential recreational facilities, we investigated environment, currentconstruction status of recreational facilities in different times and different types of residentialdistricts, and their service condition in Yangling, and residents’ requirements of residentialrecreational activities. And we discussed the problems of relationships between residentialrecreational facilities and their environment in Yangling. The conclusions were as follows:(1) Designs of urban residential recreational facilities and residential environment werecomplementary and closely linked. On the one hand, designs of residential recreationalfacilities were affected by geographical, cultural, historical, economic and social environmentof residential areas; on the other hand, the construction of residential recreational facilitiesalso affected the quality of the living environment of residential areas. (2) Through the investigation of miscellaneous residential districts in different periods inYangling, we found that there were problems of design and construction of residentialrecreational facility in all periods: most of the early residential districts in Yangling werelocated close to units and schools; there were very few residential recreational facilities, andresidents’ daily recreational activities were mostly carried out in the vicinity of the units andschools. Although recreational facilities were designed in resettlement housing communitiesand affordable housing after the demonstration zone established, most of these designs hadproblems of unreasonable set positions, detachment from environment, lack of user-friendlydesign, low construction quality, and facilities cannot meeting residents’ recreationalrequirements. After the demonstration zone established, designs of recreational facilities incommercial districts, Yangling as the representative, improved. More design thinking wascarried out on the number, quality and diversity of recreational facilities as well asrelationship with the surrounding environment. However, design problems still exist in termsof security of residential recreational facilities and reasonability of their setting position.Designers of the new real estate residential districts in recent years paid more attention torequirements of different levels of residents and combination of recreational facilities andresidential interior environment, and focused on unique residential interior living environment. But there still existed problems of excessive pursuit of visual effects in the design process, oflack of consideration of Yangling local natural environment, and of lack of humanization indesign details of recreational facilities.(3) Aiming at the current status of construction of residential recreational facilities, werecommended that in the design process of urban residential recreational facilities we shouldfirst understand the requirements of residents, make the most of the existing publicrecreational facilities in the surrounding of residential districts, combine recreational facilitiesdesigns with residential interior landscape, and carefully handle with spatial scale andlandscape details. This will not only provide a more comfortable entertainment experience forresidents, but will be awarded marks for the residential environment.(4) In the survey of residential districts in Yangling we found that there were alsoproblems of construction of the public recreational facilities, such as uneven distribution, notmeeting requirements of residents in new developmental area under the circumstance ofrapid development of urban city, single form of public facilities, lack of rich culture, lack ofdistinctive characterization. We suggested that construction of urban public facilities shouldkeep up with the pace of urban development. While adding contents, rich cultural connotationand existing environment resources of Yangling should be focused on to create an urbanbackground with rich city features to urban residents, so that the cultural continuation could be carried on while construction of urban residential recreational facilities, making residents’living more intimate and with greater belongingness.
