Earthquake is one of the greatest threats to human beings among natural disasters. In recent years, China has entered the active period of earthquakes, disaster occursfrequently. There are large amount of high buildings in modern cities, some of highbuildings are designed to be composed of several substructures because ofarchitectural modeling and functional application. When strong earthquake occurs, different dynamic characteristics and inadequate separation can easily lead to collisiondamage between adjacent buildings. When two closely spaced adjacent structures aresubjected to strong earthquakes, collisions between them may occur. So that study onthe effect of the seismic pounding and vulnerability assessment between adjacentstructures is significant. In this dissertation, the following aspects are studied throughtheoretical and numerical analysis:(1) Establish constitutive model of two adjacent RC frame structures onOpenSees, considering the different natures of near-field and far-field groundmotions, this issue select both of them to compare, The performance-basedincremental dynamic analysis was carried out using these ground motions, and IDAcurves were derived to assess seismic performance of two adjacent RC framestructures.(2) Four ultimate damage states for entire structure were defined, and based onthe definition, a method for solving the limit values of the four performance levelswas put forward. Based on the results of incremental dynamic analysis, theperformance-based seismic fragility analysis was carried out using this method, andfragility curves were derived to assess and compare the seismic performances underdifferent ground motions. According to the actual seismic demand of the structure, itcan assess structural vibration control effect under near-field and the far-field groundmotions.(3)Optimal arrangement of Maxwell dampers used to link two adjacent RCframe structures under seismic excitation was investigated. The two-step optimaldesign method was proposed. The results show the general law of the optimal arrangement of Maxwell dampers and verify the effectiveness and practicality, So thestudy make a useful discussion for the application of practical engineering.
