Wind power is paid more and more attention by human because it’s no pollution andrenewable energy. Wind power generation is developing at an unprecedented rate as amajor used form of wind energy. The proportion of wind power replacing traditionalenergy generation is gradually rising, wind power generation is more and more popularin the power system.In this paper, firstly, the present situation about the development and utilization ofwind resources is introduced and the research status of wind power generation system issummarized, then the structure of off-grid small wind power systems is given includingfixed pitch wind turbine, direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator(DPMSG),three-phase diode rectifying circuit and the Boost converter, controller, etc. The basicprinciple of wind power and wind turbine and its operation characteristic and theprinciple of maximum power point tracking(MPPT) are analyzed. The principle of theexisting MPPT algorithms such as the tip speed ratio control, power signal feedbackcontrol and perturbation observation method is analyzed. The advantages anddisadvantages of them are analyzed and compared. In order to overcome theshortcomings of the traditional perturbation observation method, the variable stepperturbation method is given.Secondly, based on MATLAB/Simulink, the simulation system of off-grid smallwind power system with the MPPT is established. Characteristics of wind power systemare simulated, and the fixed step size perturbation method and variable step perturbationmethod are simulated, the simulation results show that compared with fixed stepperturbation method, variable step perturbation method is more accurate and quick.Finally, external characteristic testing experiments are carried on the small off-gridwind power generation. The Boost circuit and power controller are designed andimplemented, then maximum power point tracking experiments are carried. Theexperiment results show that perturbation observation method can track the maximumpower effectively.
