Numerous and diverse fortresses verified the military strategies, and show the succession of the local traditional brick and stone building technology. As a result, the investigation of the fortress in Taiyuan city can make a beneficial supplement to the Shanxi province architecture history study. At the same time the investigation is the essential part of architectural localization study. Finally, the investigation will also enlighten the significance for the contemporary architectural design.With the extensive research and detailed survey, author have collected a large nu mber of first-hand information and conducted research on the fortress’historic e volution, distribution character, plan layout, material and technology. At the sam e time, we should pay attention to the relationship between the fortress’defensiv e functions and the defensive architecture of Chinese traditional buildings. On th is basis, we need to summarize the basic types and characters of Taiyuan fortress. At last we need to present the strategies to protect the fortress.
