With the development of the world economy, there is an increase in the energy consumption in various countries. With respect to China, literature has been reported that the building energy consumption can account for more than1/4of the total energy consumption, thus the requirements for building energy efficiency should be constantly improved. Henan is a Province with a large quantity of building constructions and most of them are highly energy-consuming. Unfortunately, the building energy-saving work is proved to be insufficient which has to be improved appropriately. Energy saving of the envelope is the key point for reducing building energy and as the exterior wall occupies the biggest percentage in the envelope, it can be an effective way to reduce building energy consumption through the energy efficiency reconstruction for the exterior wall. At present, exterior wall external insulation is the most widely used wall insulation technology, but there are few researches available on its seismic performance, thus further study is necessary for understanding the relevant mechanism which is also the aim of this paper.First, this paper showed the advantages of external insulation by thermal calculation and pointed out that energy efficiency retrofit of exterior wall should have been applied in Henan Province. Analyzed several types of insulation materials and calculated their applicable thicknesses, indicating the applicable situations in which the different insulation systems of the two thermal types can be used in Henan. Meanwhile, analyzed and showed the role of air layer and its appropriate position by thermal calculation.Second, this study introduced the seismic response analysis theory, which includes analysis methods, modes of seismic response and mechanical models of external thermal insulation system, etc. In addition, these theories will be used as theoretical basis for the subsequent finite element modeling. Then, established a finite element model for a five-storey reinforced concrete frame structure by using Midas/Gen. The two natural waves including El Centro wave and Tafl wave together with an artificial wave are selected as the input earthquake excitations. And the displacements and acceleration responses of both the insulation system as well as the main structure under such earthquake actions were analyzed. For the purpose of better comparison and further study, the seismic time-history responses of the insulation system and the main structure have been done with different values of the insulation mass or the storey height. Furthermore, analysis was carried out to acquire the seismic time-history response of the insulation system in different connections and the responses of the two parts under the rare earthquakes. Through the analysis above, this paper put forward some suggestions for selecting insulation system and proposed some measures for improving its seismic safety. Finally, draw the conclusions of the whole paper, pointed out the deficiency of this paper and the direction that needs to be further researched.
