Asphalt pavement is the main structure form of highway pavement in China. Theuncertainties in the design, construction or application seriously impact its reliability,making pavement usage performance fail to meet the modern demand of road traffic.Therefore, it is especially significant to study the reliability of asphalt pavement so asto make the design and construction more rational and perfect, to better reflect theactual situation of the pavement structure and to reduce the degree of inconformitybetween the theory and practice. On the basis of referring to the related domestic andinternational study fruit, this thesis gives a fundamental research on the reliability ofthe asphalt pavement systematically, combining with the characteristics of asphaltpavement engineering in China. The research results are obtained as follows:(a) Based on the extensive research on the relevant domestic and internationaldata, the internal factors and external factors of the reliability of asphalt pavement areanalyzed, mainly including pavement material properties, pavement structural design,environmental factors, vehicle load, the level of construction and maintenance, etc.Each factor is interrelated, influenced, or even superimposed with others, leading tothe diseases and damages of asphalt pavement.(b) Combined with the characteristics of the pavement structure, three limitstates of the pavement structure are analyzed based on the given definition of thereliability of asphalt pavement. They are ultimate limit state, structural damage limitstate and serviceability limit state. And the limit state equations with the deflectionand the tensional stresses as the control target are given, laying a foundation foranalyzing reliability of asphalt pavement.(c) The Fuzzy-Probability reliability analysis method of asphalt pavement isproposed and used to analyze the reliability of asphalt pavement combined with anengineering sample. The results indicate that its reliability with the fuzzy consideredis lower than without, which is more consistent with the engineering practice.(d) Combined with the factors that impact the reliability of asphalt pavement, themeasures to improve or increase the reliability of asphalt pavement are discussed in detail, concerning the structure, material, construction and maintenance, etc. Suchmeasures mainly include reasonably changing the thickness of asphalt pavementstructure layer, improving the connections between the structural layers, effectivelyimproving the performance of the organic binder and the quality of the aggregate,enhancing the adhesion of asphalt and mineral aggregate, choosing appropriate typesof bituminous mixture, improving the performance of asphalt concrete pavement andappropriately using of new materials, strengthening the quality control of constructionoperations, adopting preventive maintenance, etc.
