:Reticulate red clay is familiar in construction of geotechnical engineering around Dongting Lake. The pratical engineering shows that there is a distinguish difference in mechanical properties between the undisturbed soil and the remolded soil of the reticulated red clay. Actually, the reticulate structural plays a important role in the huge difference.From now on,there is no much research about its micro structural and the relationship between the micro characteristics and the mechanical properties of the reticulated red clay. In the practical engineering, because of the lack of understanding of the structure of the reticulated red clay and the design and construction accidents have occured, so for the study of the micro structure of the reticulated red soil on the geotechnical engineering problems, and engineering construction has important theoretical significance and economic significance.Based on the results of the previous studies, this thesis make a series of laboratory experiments and theoretical analysis of reticulate red clay.The main achievement were obtained as follows:1、Improving the soil’s quantitative analysis capability and efficiency of ESEM image excessively,and the micro structure parameter of reticulated red clay can be meatured quickly by the means of IPP technique.2、Systematic studied the microstructural features of the Dongting Lake area reticulated red soil undisturbed and remolded samples, figured out the roundness is about0.6, the shape of the basic structure unit are sheet aggregates and flaky particles,and the form of contact between the particles are surface-surface and surface-edge. Undisturbed samples and remolded sample particle arrangement is disordered, directional angle has no certain rule, the shape of particles are irregular, particle size distribution of undisturbed sample is remolded samples have no significant difference.3、The micro pore structure is small, pore size of less than0.3μm accounted for more than93%,the shape of pore are anisometric and slit. Undisturbed sample with lower porosity and poor connectivity between the pore,and which means better mechanical properties than the remolded sample of the reticulated red clay.4、Particles of irregular shape and obscure orientation show the fractal feature,and the fractal dimension is between1to2, which prove the microstructure of reticulated red clay is complex. At the same time reticulated red soil pore size distribution has fractal characteristics, the corresponding pore fractal dimension is2.7and2.8.5、The reticulated red clay arrangement tend to simple cubic(SC) packing(i.e., loosest possible packing).
