With the rapid development of motor manufacturing technology, microelectronics and power electronics technology, the servo system with the motor as execution unit has penetrated into all areas of living, industrial production and military weapons and other social areas. With respect to the electrical excitation AC motors, permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) has more simple structure, more reliable operation, lighter weight, smaller size, lower loss, and higher efficiency. Thus the PMSM has became the mainstream in the AC servo period. With the application of permanent magnet synchronous motor AC servo systems are widely used, the requirements of servo system controller with good performance is increasing. As the motor parameters will be changed within a certain range at different environment and operating state, except that the use of high.performance control strategies to reduce or eliminate the negative impact on controller from the parameters change, another effective way is parameter identification and tunning.Firstly, in the paper, the PMSM basic concepts and structure will be analyzed, and a mathematical model of permanent magnet synchronous motors will be built. Then explain the importance of the motor parameter identification through the connection between servo controller design and motor parameters. In the next, the paper will introduce some popular lab method of parameters identification then analyzed in detail. These methods are AC standstill test, DC standstill test and the small current injection method. And it will analyze those method’s advantages and disadvantages briefly. Finally, the paper will propose an new improved DC standstill test.
