The reinforced concretes of many open-type pier on piles, which were built in last century, have been eroded and destroyed at different level far before their reasonable service life ended. The main damages are that the surface of concrete was rusted, the concrete cover was broken, and the rebar was eroded. More seriously, the concrete cover had been taken off and the section of rebar became slim and broken, which induced the complete failure of structure. To ensure the safety of pier and lengthen its life, durability detection and repair of the reinforced concretes structure are demanded by both charged departments and the user of piers.This paper states the current situation about the corrosion damage of reinforced concrete structure in the open-type pier on piles in the Southern Coastal Areas. It discusses the durability detection project of the pier’s structure and assessment method. It also mainly states the principle of CI penetrating concrete; the calculation method of CI penetration coefficient which affects the lifespan of the structure; the selection of CI density on concrete surface; the determination of environmental CI density; the relationship between the thickness of concrete cover and the strength of concrete. It produces the lifespan calculation process of the harbor reinforced concrete structures after they are destroyed by the erosion of CI penetration. Furthermore, it successfully applies into the durability assessment on one of open-type pier on piles in the Zhoushan area, which achieves an excellent result. Meanwhile, it conducts the research on the content and ways of the structure durability test for the current national ocean harbor and concludes the "pre-control" maintaining system.In addition, this paper compares and concludes the different repair methods for reinforced concrete erosion of coastal open-type pier. Base on the theory of Philosophy and Management, it proposes a repair way and produces a wide discussion based on the overview idea. The lifespan of the pier in the Zhoushan area has been improved by successfully applying this repair way on it.
