The NOx emitted from the coal combustion process is harmful for atmospheric surroundings and human activities. With the increasing restrictions for NOx emitted from the coal-fired power plants, the low-NOx combustion technology enters a new stage in the utility boiler in China. After retrofitting the low-NOx combustor, the boiler should be operated under new operating methods, which ensures safety, low-NOx emission and high effectiveness. Thus, the research of NOx production mechanism and the furnace combustion process is of significance.This paper selects a subcritical600MW power plant with vortex hedge combustion method as the research objective, simulates the pulverized coal combustion process in the furnace, conducts the effects of excess air, over fire air, primary air and second air on the NOx emission and proposes the operating methods to reduce the NOx emission. Based on the numerical simulation, this paper also conducts the thermodynamic experiments to conclude the optimal operating method, which provides a guideline for operators in the coal-fired power plant. Finally, the low-NOx combustor accidents after retrofitting are analyzed and the improvement measures are proposed. The conclusion got in this paper can provide a route for the similar boiler combustor operation after retrofitting.
