There are many kinds of museums and classification methods, but no unified international classification standard.Different countries have different classifications of museums due to differences in national condition, history, public needs and management requirements. However, museums can generally be classified by four criteria:construction area, collection, service object and management. In which the collection of museum plays a decisive role in the interior and exterior architectural style of the museum. According to collections, museums can be classified as comprehensive museums and theme museums. The comprehensive museums include the international comprehensive museums (such as the British Museum) and many national and local comprehensive museums (such as the National Museum of Korea). The theme museums have a wide range of topics, covering history, art, ethnic folklore, culture, science and many other aspects. It can be said that themed museums have become the development trend of museums. On the one hand, this is mainly due to the continuous rise of private museums. On the other hand, with the highly developed human knowledge nowadays, the in-depth understanding of certain knowledge and culture gradually has appeal to more people.Compared with many outstanding foreign specialized museums, there are still many problems in China’s specialized museums. The exterior building is often in line with the theme of the museum, for instance, the architectural appearance of sailing museums are often in the shape of a sailing boat in white, but the interior space cannot express the museum’s theme features, thoughts and feelings and cultural connotation. There are serious modellings in the design of museums, i.e. the visual effects of internal space cannot reflect the uniqueness of museums. This has affected the spiritual experience of visitors to a certain extent, and reduced the fun of visit. This requires designers to adopt a themed design method to design specialized museums, so as to create better theme museum atmosphere and better environment for spiritual and cultural experience.Starting from basic elements of interior design, such as space, materials, furnishings and lighting, the paper will explore the theme design of museums by combining themed design with the fundamental theory of museum design.Interior design is a very practical discipline. The paper will analyze some actual cases through the comparison of materials, space, lighting and furnishings, and complete it by designing and implementing the graduation project.Through the study on museums’theme design and analysis of the design of Yanbian Regional Museum, the paper summarizes experiences in designing theme museums, and finds out a museum design method that is applicable to Yanbian and has national features, making it easier for people to understand, learn and appreciate various unique featured cultures. This is also of great significance in reflecting the development of space design industry.
