All-terrain-vehicle, which is also called ATV for short, is a novel concept vehicle. The structure of the ATV is distinct, and it performs well in the off-road, as well as in thesand, river bed, forest, and streams etc. In recent, as the economic growth and fiercemarketing require more from the ride comfort of the ATV, is has an obvious influence onthe sale of the ATV products. In this paper, the frame of the ATV is optimal designed so asto improve the vibration performance. This work fully integrates the real manufacturing ofthe coMPany, and it is believed that this study is of great significance in providing a realapplication in terms of engineering field. The research plan and methodology of this work are as follows(1) In view of the running process of the ATV and its structural feature, the threedimension (3D) modeling software-UG and finite element analysis (FEA)software-HyperMesh, are employed simultaneously to build the geometry model and FEAmodel of the ATV.(2) The software-Altair HyperWorks, together with the modal testing and analysissystem-LMS, are individually used to separately conduct the analytical modal analysis andexperimental modal analysis. As coMPared with the experimental modal analysis, theanalytical modal successfully verified the accuracy of the finite element model and themodal analysis result.(3) Considering the practice situation of the ATV during its running process, theinfluence of alternative factors on the frame vibration of the ATV are analyzed. Theanalysis results show that the engine excitation has the maximum probability in inducingthe resonance of the vehicle frame. As a result, it is necessary to implement an optimaldesign for the structure of the vehicle frame.(4) In accordance with the fundamental theory of the structure optimization andsensitivity analysis, the thickness of components, which has a larger sensitive to theinherent frequency among the vehicle frame, is selected as the optimal variable. Moreover, the first order natural frequency of the vehicle frame is set as the objective, following withthe constraint that the overall mass of the vehicle is not added. Then, the optimal model areconstructed with the aforesaid considerations. In addition, the model is optimized withsoftware-Altair OptiStruct, and then the performance of the optimized vehicle frame is calibrated on the basis of the real situation.
