With the development of the society, the urbanization is accelerating. Nowadays, the increasing consumption of urban water causes over-exploitation of groundwater. Urban construction leads to hardened land, keeps rainwater from penetrating into underground, and influences then environment of city. Natural water cycle is highly interfered by urban construction. With the affecting of global warming, the intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall are both increasing, which directly threat to human life and property safety. The problems which leaded by city development, such as severe floods, urban pollution, eutrophication and destruction of the natural environment would influence human health indirectly. To solve these problems, the ideas of a sustainable drainage system come out, which emphasize controlling from source, rainwater collection and utility, protecting the environment and city water system. As the essential part of drainage system, gutter should also be the important role of landscape design, however, it is always ignored by designer. Currently, our design over-pursuing the function, lacking landscape diversity, character of city, and existing no city culture or connotation. So landscape drains is the product of urbanization and also the trends of the construction of infrastructure. The idea of landscape drains is put forward in this paper by combining the concept of basic knowledge and landscape quality. Using aesthetic theory garden, landscape ecology, geographical and cultural theory, landscape drains are classified to obvious ditch and hidden ditch according to the location of ditch. Based on section forms, there are rectangular drains, trapezoidal drains, and U-shaped drains. In material, there are ditch, brick ditch, stone ditch, concrete ditch, metal ditch. This paper analyzes and summarizes the basic functions and auxiliary functions of landscape drains, inducing the material selection, flow design, dimensions and section forms of landscape drains, in reasonable and appropriate design ways. Functional principle, the principle of ecological, cultural and geographical landscape artistic principles are proposed in landscape drains design. Combined with practical case, this paper standardize the elements and design principles of landscape drains design, make some suggestions of it. Through this paper, I hope it can provide relevant theory and new thinking method to designers, to make some contribution to the achievement of sustainable urban drainage.
