In recent years, the number and voltage of XLPE power cables have beendeveloped rapidly. Power cable researchers focus on the method to detect and locate theinsulation fault of XLPE power cable by detection and analysis of partial discharge (PD).This paper analyzed the detection, propagation and localization of the power cable PDsignal by Matlab based on the method of pulse current method. The power line simulation model was established in this paper. The transmissionrules of different frequency of pulse signal in different length of power cable weresimulated. The simulation results show that the attenuation of the high frequency signal ismore obvious and the lag time is longer. The simulation model of Rogowski coil current transformer was established and thetransmission characteristics of1MHz~200MHz current signal were simulated. After manytimes of trial, the structure of the Rogowski coil current transformer was designed to meetthe requirements of detection of PD signal of power cables. At the same time, thepreamplifier circuit and signal acquisition were designed in this paper. In order to simulate the short time partial discharge signal with big high frequency asimulation model based on double exponential function model was established. Thetransmission of partial discharge signal in cable was simulated too.On the basis of the simulation, the location of the cable partial discharge point wascalculated by the traveling wave method. Based on the improved traveling wave method, the location error is reduced to within1%.
