Curved girder bridges can overcome the limitation of terrain, well meet the continuity of roadline and its fluent streamline has great art of architecture, so that it is wildly used at home andabroad in recent years. Since American San Fernando earthquake (1971) lead to the collapseof two large interchanges, much attention has been given to the study of seismic effects onstructures of this type. While, curved girder bridges still suffered severe damage evencollapsed in the past damage earthquake, such as, Loma Prieta earthquake (1989) andWenchuan earthquake (2008). It is suggested that the study of seismic effects on curved girderbridges are still very important and meaningful. The paper focuses on north subsidiaryhighway bridges of Liu Cunpu interchange, which was damaged in the earthquake of Dingxiin Gan Su province. Spectral and time history analysis is conducted, and special attention ispaid to the pounding effect and its influence on the structural displacement and internal forceresponse. The main work is as follows. Firstly, curved girder bridge is analyzed by FEMmethod, then, the initial internal force, the influence of prestress on the deformationperformance of columns and the effect of temperature on the bearings are studied. Controlparameters in different critical directions are also studied with elastic time history analysismethod. Secondly, structure behavior under E1and E2earthquake is studied with spectral andtime history analysis method to get a thorough understanding of such curved bridges. Besides, the results are compared with values specified in the current seismic code, feasibility of thesetwo seismic analysis methods is also compared. Lastly, Special emphasis is laid on thestructural pounding and its effect on the displacement and force response through the methodof nonlinear time history analysis. It is suggested that structural initial internal force, plasticityof columns, nonlinear characteristics of bearings and pounding effect should be consided toget accurate analysis result.
