With the development of our country`s economy and the implementation of the strategyof China Western Development, there is an increasing number of high-grade highways inmountain areas being planning and constructing. The tunnel and bridge connection in thedesign of highways in mountain areas is inevitable and has become a problem. The design ofit has a significant influence on construction safety, operational safety, and the harmony ofhighway and natural environment. In the tunnel and bridge connection engineering, theinteractions of bridge, tunnel and surrounding rock are extremely complex. At present, thestudy of tunnel and bridge connection engineering is very deficient in our county. Theresearch regarding how to analyze and summarize the construction of tunnel and bridgeconnection and bridge`s influence on the structure of tunnel is not enough in-depth.The connection sections involved in this paper are mostly the bridge-tunnel connections.This paper analyzed and summarized the three connecting forms of bridge and tunnelconnection in mountain areas: integral bridge-tunnel connection, close type of bridge-tunnelconnection and connecting type of bridge-tunnel connection. Their application conditions andthe designing and constructing characteristics are analyzed and researched. Their applicationchoices in the construction of highways in the mountain areas are concluded. Combined withthe characteristics of bridge-tunnel connection engineering, this paper analyzed andsummarized the construction techniques and methods of the bridge and tunnel connectionsections.For the integral bridge-tunnel connection engineering, the finite element method withANSYS software was applied to analyze the stress field of the portal section of open cuttunnels and trumpet-like tunnels. Moreover, the ground surface settlement before and after thebridge construction, displacement of arch and the stress conditions of portal section and insidesection were numerically simulated and analyzed. Finally, through the numerical simulationof two kinds of integral bridge-tunnel connection, the influence of bridge load on the structureof tunnel portal section was achieved and the problems, that engineers should pay attention toduring the construction process of tunnel portal, were put forward.
