Rolling bearing is usually applied to the magnetic suspension bearing system as backupprotection of electrical and mechanical failure. Auxiliary bearing is often failed by excessive heatgeneration and unable to live up to its protection function. This paper is aiming at a new kind ofauxiliary bearing which can eliminate the radial protective clearance automatically and researchingthermal characteristics of the new auxiliary bearing through establishing its thermal model. The mainresearch contents include: On the theory of rigid rotor, the process of equivalent gap circle is used tobuilding up the dynamic model of rotor falling into the new auxiliary bearing and gets the dynamicresponse. Then heat network nodes and finite volume methods are utilized to analyze the newauxiliary bearing’s transient temperature field calculation in foundation of its dynamic model, thetemperature field distribution is obtained under different rotational speeds and contrastive analysiswith the ordinary bearing under the same working conditions is considered. At last, test bench is builtand temperature experiments is performed, the experimental results is analyzed and compared withtheoretical results to provide reference for improving the design of the new auxiliary bearing. Due totheoretical analysis, parameter calculation and experimental verification, the results show that: Theelimination of protection gap can reduce the collision force between parts effectively and eliminatethe possibility of whirl motion. Under the same conditions, the temperature rise of new auxiliarybearing is40%to70%less than the ordinary one. In drop experiment, the test result can be inaccordance with the theoretical calculations; it proves that the method of new auxiliary bearing isentirely feasible in practice to calculate the temperature in this paper.
