Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system is a kind of passive infrared detection system, its task isto detect, locate and continuous tracking targets by receiving Infrared emission which is under thedisturbance of background and other noises. The IRST system, as an important part of modernmilitary field, has passive detection and invisibility, high maneuverability and so on. Its research,which is mainly concentrated in extract the target characteristics and signal processing, but it is lesson the IRST system integrity research. In this paper, we study airborne infrared search tracking system,and achieve the functional design of the simulation system combined with the visual software.Through the analysis of the airborne IRST system working principle and function request, thesystem is divided into four major functional units. It mainly includes the target and backgroundinfrared imaging, the infrared image information processing, the scanning mechanism of the searchand track, the switch mechanism of the search and track status.On the basis of the Vega which is the visual simulation software, the paper studied the IRSTsystem simulation. First of all, through the study of infrared imaging theory and Vega, the paperdesigned the target and background infrared imaging in the3-D visual. It builds the whole architectureof airborne IRST system, and also designs the information processor and trajectory processor in theinformation processing module which are divided in the logical to realize the function of the potentialtarget extraction and the target tracking confirmation. Second, the information processing should beapplied to the infrared image which contains the targets, here we studied the commonly used methodof the infrared dim target detection under the sky and the sky-ground background, and improved it forimproving real time performance and accuracy of the target detection. To further improve the generaldetecting before tracking algorithm which is composed of two processors, the paper designed thecorresponding information processing method corresponds to the three kinds of working state, that is,a wide range of search tracking, a rough search tracking and aiming-tracking, which is proposed inthis paper. Again, the search and track scanning mechanism would need the result of the informationprocessing. To realize the search and track scanning work simulation and the status switching, a kindof method which uses observers and volumes of the Vega has been proposed.In the last, this paper designs and realizes the simulation of airborne IRST system with theintegration of modules above. Through the real-time performance of the system and the functionaltesting and evaluation, this paper verifies the feasibility and validity of the simulation system.
