Non-contact ultrasonic motor was developed in the early1990s. It has a new drive principle,high rotational speed and no wear.This paper focuses on the non-contact ultrasonic motor’s high speed characteristics and thepotential applications in the gyro rotor, a cylindrical non-contact ultrasonic motor based onacoustic radiation pressure and acoustic viscous force was developed. The motor’s stator dynamicdesign, the principle of the stator’s vibration mechanism induced near-field, sound-structurecoupling, the characteristics of the prototype’s suspension and the driving were studied accordingthe design purpose of the high speed non-contact ultrasonic motor. The main researchachievements were summarized as follows:1. The structural characteristics and the driving mechanism of cylindrical non-contactultrasonic motor were described. The solutions were proposed to improve the rotor’s rotationalspeed based on the current development of non-contact ultrasonic motor and the application areasof the project.2. By adding the specific microstructure on the stator or the rotor to alter the near-field soundeffect, this original idea was presented in this paper. A near-field sound mode of themicro-structure was established and was analyzed, a variety of different forms of the stator androtor surface micro-structure and improved non-contact ultrasonic motor were designed andproduced.3. The non-contact ultrasonic motor’s output characteristics under the different air layerthickness between the stator and the rotor were studied based on large number of experiments. Therelationship between the motor’s output characteristics with the air layer thickness weresummarized.4. The sound field distribution of the air layer between the stator and the rotor were analyzedand simulated in the theoretical, and the change of the sound field of the air layer between thestator and the rotor which surface micro-structure were improved was simulated. The outputcharacteristics of the improved motors were experimentally studied, the rotational speed waslargely increased in which surface were added the helical groove.
