Micro Air Vehicles(MAVs) are widely used in military and civilian applications according totheir dramatic advantages. In this paper, a new monocopter MAV was researched about the overalldesign, aerodynamic calculations and flight controls.Mono-copter is a rotary wing unmanned aircraft that only consist of single wing and onepropulsion/thrust system. It rotates about a point near the Center of Gravity and will lift off when therotation reach the speed required by the wing to lift the weight of the mono-copter. It mimics theauto-rotation of a maple seed (Samara) when it falls to the ground. The main challenge in designingmono-copter is make it controllable. Since all of its part is rotating, there is no fixed orientation whichis available on a fixed wing aircraft.Referring to the nature of the maple seed spin flight mode, combined with the overall design ofthe aircraft, the author studied the monocopter aerodynamic shape and the overall structure, and thendesigned a Mono-wing-copter. On the basis of Catia three-dimensional modeling, adapting CFDmethods at low Reynolds numbers, under typical flight conditions, for aerodynamic performancecalculation and analysis of monocopter. And innovative designs for monocopter flight controlmethods as well as the autonomous flight control Algorithm was researchedFinally the structural design of the entire monocopter, component selecting and assemblyprototype manufacture, test flight was completed.Flight test results showed that the design andmanufacture of monocopter can took off steadily, hover relatively stable, any horizontal directionflight can be achieved.
