Based on rudder design in civil ship design work, the rudder areaselection of spade rudder and semi-spade rudder in the early design stage,the confirmation of rudder shape and cross section profile, and the rudderparameter selection such as aspect ratio, balance ratio and thickness ratioshall be performed. Simultaneously the relevant requirement for rudderdesign in DNV, LR, ABS and GL rules shall be compared. The EXCELcalculation for main parameter of rudder design shall also be compiled.While determining the rudder stock diameter on the neck bearing insemi-spade rudder design, DNV, LR, ABS and GL require directcalculation of bending moment at the section in question. We shall set upload model of semi-spade rudder and lead to direct calculation of bendingmoment on the neck bearing. The EXCEL calculation for direct calculationof rudder stock diameter shall also be compiled. Steering gear is important equipment for vessel maneuverability. Itsreliability has straight influence on vessel security. In traditional design theparameters are taken as fixed value and no randomization is considered.We’ll introduce the item of reliability on the basis of traditional rudderdesign and set forth the reliability design of rudder stock.Container carrier and patrol ship etc. get high demand on ship rapidity.Usually designer doesn’t have regard to cavitation of ship underwaterappendage. Denudation often appears on parts of rudder and rudder hornand lead to ship maneuverability lowering and extra repair. We shalldiscuss more about rudder cavitation and its prevention.
