Fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites are widely used in aerospace,automobile, electric power industury,and so on.Compared with other materials,such as the composite processed by Resin Transfer molding,the composite of sheet metal forming,metals, glass mat thermoplastic has many advantages for instance the process time is short,can be redused,high specific strength,light weight,high rigidity.We can achieve weight loss,shock absorption,noise reduction’s goal and its’ application in auto industry is more and more widely. More than 80% of the glass mat thermoplastic composites( GMT) are used in the automotive industry include the car ’s bodywork,front ends,seats frame, front and aft crossmember,bumper,battery tray, instrument panel,act.The forming of glass mat thermoplastic is simple and its cost is low.It can make us to have the ability of professional and mass production. In this paper, we aimed at the study of forming properties of glass mat thermoplastic composites by the experiment of warm and hot stamping and forming simulation using finite element.First,in order to get the tensile strength and the tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus, we chose two kinds of the material, one is glass mat reinforced polypropylene(GMT-PP) and the other is glass mat reinforced Polyamide(GMT-PA), to do the uniaxial tensile test and bending test according to the ASTM standard. It provided a reference for the forming experiment and finite element simulation.Second,we selected two kinds of GMT materials, PA and PP, as the matrix material, and the experiment was carried out. In order to get the forming limit of the material at different temperatures, we designed the forming tools and carried out the forming experiment. Finally, we analyzed the impact of temperature and the depth of forming on the GMT.Third,based on the viscoelastic theory and the relationship between stress and strain, we did GMT-PP stamping forming simulation using the finite element software ABAQUS and get the curves about stamping depth and pressure at different temperature. Compared with the experimental results, we can verify the constitutive model which we chose was reasonable or not.
