In the continuous casting process, casting crystallizer is the "heart". Taper is one of the most important parameters of the casting crystallizer. The appropriate design of the taper will reduce the problems such as rhomboidity, longitudinal depression, bulging and snapping, which can prolong the service life of the crystallizer as well as promote the quality of the casting blank. While, the molten steel in casting crystallizer forms a complex thermodynamic system, which makes it difficult and expensive to investigate the solidification process of the molten steel by experimental methods. And the experiment results may also inaccuracy. Nowadays, simulation methods are commonly used, which may give insight into the flow field and temperature field of the casting crystallizer, and provide reliable theory basis for the taper design of the casting crystallizer.In this paper, the billet continuous casting crystallizer which size is 340 mm x 280 mm is investigated. Simulation method by the finite-element analysis software FLUENT was used. The specific research contents are shown as follows:Firstly, the related control equations of molten steel are defined. The performance parameters and the casting parameters are also defined. Then the mathematical model of the simulation is built.Secondly, the flow field and temperature field of the casting crystallizer with specific speed, side-hole angle and side-hole immersion depth is simulated by FLUENT. The simulation results such as fluid-structure interaction and thermal stress are analyzed, which provide insight into the temperature distribution, the shell growth condition and the shrinkage condition of the slab.Finally, the design and application of crystallizer taper are studied, and the taper design of casting slab shrinkage is obtained by numerical simulation. Process for making taper of crystallizer, as well as the way to measure and guarantee the taper of the casting crystallizer are also introduced in detail.
