In recent years, dust explosion accidents happened frequently, and caused heavy casualties and property losses. So the whole society attached much importance to dust and its explosions and many reports on similar topics exist. There are increasing research focusing on magnesium and aluminum dust, grain dust, wood dust, whilst the research on dust explosion of synthetic material is relatively rare, especially on the unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust. Under such background that unsaturated polyester resin is widely used in the production of resin buttons, the risk of unsaturated polyester resin dust explosion in the button factorys should not be ignored.To investigate the explosion characteristics of unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust, and fill in the blanks in this research areas, and also provide reliable data for the safety production of dust-related enterprises, the author presents the explosion characteristic parameters of unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust from the perspectives of theory and experiment. And, ANSYS finite element sofeware is employed to simulate the stress, strain and displacement of filter during the dust explosion in progress, which might strengthen employees’ awareness of risk about unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust explosions, and improve employees’ safety consciousness. Finally, measures of prevention and improvement are proposed based on the results of experiments and simulation. The main contents are as follows.(1) Explosion sensitivity parameters of unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust are obtained by test, including minimum ignition energy of dust cloud, minimum ignition temperature of dust cloud, minimum ignition temperature of the dust layer, dust volume resistivity, lower explosion limit of dust cloud. Test results show that the buttons dust has high explosion sensitivity.(2) Explosion intensity parameters of unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust are also obtained by test, including maximum explosion pressure of dust cloud, maximum rate of explosion pressure rise of dust cloud, and explosion index. Test results show that the hazard level of unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust is St1.(3) The consequence of dust explosion is then simulated. Results show that the filter housing may completely destroyed, and the maximum displacement of the housing may be up to 107.36 m.(4) According to the results of experiments and simulation, from the four aspacts, including explosion characteristics of buttons dust, control of dust concentration and ignition sources, inherent reliability improvement of filter, measures are proposed to prevent the explosions and reduce the severity of dust explosion accidents.In summary, the unsaturated polyester resin buttons dust has high explosion sensitivity, and could cause explosion accident easily. In addition, the consequence of the accident is serious. Therefore, protective measures must be taken in the production.
