As a green pretreatment technology, SPME integrates multiple operations, such as sample collection, extraction, enrichment of the analyte and separating the analytes from the sample matrix. SPME can be used in combination with a suitable sampling device to collect analytes from different matrices, and reduce the error of sample pretreatment to chromatographic analysis. In addition, it limits the negative effects of natural environment and the health of experimental person in analysis procedure. Choosing suitable SPME coating is the key to effectively extract the target analytes from complex sample matrix. Therefore, different preparation methods of SPME coating have been developed and used to expand the types of coating and SPME device. Cyclodextrin has a hollow truncated cone with a hydrophobic cavity and a hydrophilic wall, which is well known to entrap and retain analytes with appropriate sizes and polarities in its cavity forming reversible and noncovalent inclusion complexes. The analytical applications of CDs have been continuously expanding and it is considered to be a versatile additive in the fields of molecular recognition-based analytical techniques. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with good stability has been a very sophisticated analytical instrument. HPLC is coupled to SPME for the identification and determination of specific analytes. SPME-HPLC technology has achieved efficient separation and high sensitivity of the detection of target molecule. In this paper, different hyphenated approaches between CD-SPME and HPLC have been introduced and applied to the determination of target analytes in liquid based food products.1. Off-line coupling of cyclodextrin solid phase microextraction and HPLCThe organic-inorganic hybrid silica/amino cyclodextrin extracting phase developed by immobilized amino cyclodextrin based on organic-inorganic hybrid silica support was reported for the first time. The CDs solid phase microextraction was combined off-line with HPLC for determination of benzoic acid in soft drink. The extraction selectivity, extraction/desorption equilibrium, linearity, reproducibility and lifetime for the CDs SPME were evaluated. And the established method was finally applied to analysis of benzoic acid in soft drink. Comparing to the traditional techniques, SPME-HPLC is simple to operate and need less sample, operation time and organic solvent, according with the development trend of green, low carbon and environmental protection. This method provides a useful and practical approach to be applied to the routine monitoring of benzoic acid in soft drink.2. Automated on-line coupling of in-tube CDs solid phase microextraction with HPLCIn this paper, the capillary GC column was used as in-tube SPME coupled automated on-line to HPLC, using a commercial HP-Chiral (10% permethylated-β-cyclodextrin) gas chromatographic column as the extraction medium, provided a convenient method for simultaneous determination of DMP and BPA in bottled mineral water sample. This method is fully automated, simple, rapid, sensitive, reducing the potential for analyte loss during the extraction, minimizing solvent use and consequently reducing environmental contamination. It can be applied easily to the routine monitoring of DMP and BPA in water samples.
