Pump is widely used in daily life and production, around 20% of yearly power consumption is occupied by pumps. The parts on pump like housing, impeller and cover are mostly made from casting process. Since casted parts normally have much more design characteristics, complicated casting process and low quality requirements, so it’s difficult to make a quick and comprehensive optimization by traditional design method. So this topic has carried out the optimization design method based on CAD/CAE software technics, integrated optimization for function, and the cost of products. The main research content is as follows:1) Taking an existing housing as example, analyzed the structure characteristics and basic functions, then get some key parameters which impact the functions, to provide the basis for structure optimization.2) Based on the analysis on structure characteristics and functions, created parametric 3D model in CATIA. With integrated optimization on both performance and cost as the goal. Using ANSYS to simulate structure strength, stiffness and hydraulic performance, and get the best design solution.3) Finally the assembly test, pressure test, vibration test and hydraulic performance test were done, and the test results are in accord with the analysis and simulations. It’s proved the optimization method on casting parts like pump housing is right, and provided a method for such parts’ optimal design in the future.
