Janus colloidal particles, which have different properties at opposite sides, are anisotropic materials of both scientific and technological points of view. The colloidal particles have tremendous potential in the fields of materials and engineering, including amphiphilic, optical, magnetic, catalytic properties and biomedical application. However, the preparation Janus colloidal particles are still many difficulties, for example, preparation of functional and specific shape Janus colloidal particles is also very limited, so the need to develop new methods to prepare Janus colloidal particles.First, a facile method combining seeded-emulsion polymerization and thiol-click chemistry has been developed to synthesize bioactive Janus colloidal particles. Thanks to emulsion polymerization, the synthesis can be scaled up to synthesis large quantities of biofunctional Janus particles. Equipped with click-chemistry, our method is general and can be extended to synthesis a myriad of biofunctional Janus particles by using vast selection of available bio-molecules. Our method includes the following steps:(1) Dimple seed particles were prepared by emulsion polymerization.(2) Synthesis of Janus particles by seed emulsion polymerization.(3) Diofunctionalization of Janus particles through thiol-click chemistry.(4) Binding of lection to bioJanus particles. Fluorescence microscopy image illustrates only one side of the particle has fluorescent, and this result shows that these bio-functional Janus particles have region-selective binding of protein.Second, By controlling the viscosity of the colloidal particles, driven by surface tension effects of deformation of non-spherical particles, novel Janus colloidal particles with special shape was prepared. The specific method is: based on similar principles of compatibility, selecting organic solvent which similar to composition of the colloidal particles of the polymer solubility parameter to swell particles, reducing the viscosity of the colloidal particles themselves. Due to the surface tension, causing the particles by a non-spherical shape of the transition to the sphere. In addition, regulation of particle deformation by surface evaporation fellowships process to prepare a horn-shaped shape and surface roughness of Janus colloidal particles. These novel anisotropic particle should exhibit unique and heretofore unexplored self-assembly and potential applications in biomaterials if the gold is further modified via thiol-chemistry.
