China has become the biggest production country of gel pen, because its yield were the highest in the world since 2003. But the foreign country protect the gel ink technology from diffusing, so the gel ink technology of our country is not complete and our country need to import superior gel ink. According to statistics, our country spent as much as 500-600 million yuan in importing superior gel ink every year. So we should achieve the gel ink technology breakthrough and make our country stronger in gel ink field.In the paper, the definition, process technology, composition and research and development situation of gel ink were first reviewed. It illustrate that the composition of gel ink have an important role in the performance of gel pen.It was explored that how the styrene-maleic anhydride resin as dispersant influenced the performance of gel ink. It mainly discussed how the amount of two difference molecular weight of styrene-maleic anhydride resin (SMA 3000H and SMA 1000H) influenced the stability of dispersion of gel ink and the best additive quantity were got in the paper. In order to get the relationship between the content of styrene-maleic anhydride resin and the rheological parameter(thixotropic loop area, yield value, apparent viscosity), it was investigated the relationship of the content of styrene-maleic anhydride resin with the rheological performance of gel ink, the results found that they had quantitative relationship by fitting in mathematical method. According to gel ink of Mikuni, optimal dosage of SMA 3000H and SMA 1000H resin were gained.It was studied carbon black influence the performance of gel ink, this chapter embark on the different physical character of carbon black, discussing the relationship between physical character and the dispersibility of carbon black, it turned out that the carbon black which have big specific surface area and small adsorption of DBP were dispersed easily and can make stable dispersion of gel ink. It was also analyzed the rheological parameter of gel ink which was prepared by different type of carbon black and got the relationship between different physical characteristic of carbon black and rheological parameter of gel ink. At the same time, the relationship between the content of carbon black and rheological parameter of gel ink was investigated, and the quantitative relationship by fitting in mathematical method was given. According to rheological parameter of Mikuni, optimal dosage of carbon black was 6.5-7.5 wt.%.We found that the particle size of carbon black influence the stability of gel ink, and when the particle size of carbon black reached 80 nm, the dispersion of gel ink is stable. Meanwhile it was investigated the relationship between the particle size of carbon black and the rheological property of gel ink. It was drew qualitative conclusion that the particle size of carbon black influence rheological property of gel ink, In this chapter, the different types of solvent were selected to make gel ink in order to know their effect on gel ink. And it turned out that the carbon chain length, hydroxylation and compatibility with dispersant of solvent influenced the rheological parameter of gel ink.Gel ink which were made by five types of thickener (ALCOGUARD 5800, ASE-60,8C-49, T-938 and T-251) had the different stablility, and ALCOGUARD 5800 and T-938 were selected as the best thickener for the dispersion of styrene-maleic anhydride resin, so it was explored that the relationship between the two thickener and rheological parameter of gel ink. It turned out that the gel ink with only thickener ALCOGUARD 5800 or T-938 did not have good rheological parameter and the demand of writing. So the complex with two thickener were added in gel ink, and results were found when the thickener ALCOGUARD 5800 and T-938 were added in 1.0 wt% and 0.4 wt% respectively, the gel ink had good rheological parameter and good writing performance, matching with gel ink of Mikuni.In the paper, the gel ink system was closely related with the gel ink composition. It was investigated that the two kinds of dispersion resin influenced the dispersibility and rheology property of gel ink, so the optimum addition of dispersion resin was gained. For sake of selecting optimum carbon black types, it was explored that the relationship between the carbon black types and the properties of gel ink. This paper introduced the relationship between the particle size of carbon black and the properties of gel ink, and the relationship between solvent and the rheology of gel ink. Meanwhile the best polyacrylate thickener was given from the stability of gel ink, and it was explored that the relationship between the thickener and rheology of gel ink so that the high-end gel ink was made.
