Silicone oil is used as a common finishing agent for textile to achieve excellent touch feeling and application performance. In recent decades, great progresses have been made in the development of silicone oils. And a great amount of such products have been exploited in the textile industry. Among them, the block amino-silicones were widely used because of the advantages such as versatility and high cost-effectiveness. However, their use is still limited by shortcomings such as poor hydrophilia of final products and yellowing of fabrics as a result of high-temperature treatment in the finishing process. In the present study, epoxy polyether and epoxy alkane were chosen as agents to modify silicone oils for better performance.1. Synthesis of block silicon oilsEpoxy silicone oil of molecular mass 4000, 7000, 10000 and polyethenoxyamine of molecular mass 600, 900 were tested as modifying materials for the synthesis of different block silicone oils. The synthesis process was optimized through selection of solvents, control of reaction time and choice of raw materials. The product was emulsified and in concentration of 30 g/L used as finishing solution to treat cotton fabrics. The quality of the treated cotton fabrics was examined. It was found that the silicon oil synthesized using the epoxy silicone oil of molecular mass 7000 and polyethenoxyamine of molecular mass 900 had great potential for modification.2. Synthesis of modified block silicon oilsEpoxy polyether and epoxy alkane different in length were chosen as modifying agents for the synthesis of terpolymer block silicone oils. The reaction conditions were optimized. And again the product was emulsified and made up to a concentration of 30 g/L to be used as finishing solution to treat cotton fabrics. It was found that the block silicone oils using 1,2-epoxyhexadecane and epoxy polyether with 15 EO for modification exhibited good finishing performance.3. Emulsification and application of silicon oilsAEO and OP are two series of emulsifiers. Both of them were chosen to emulsify the terpolymer block silicone oils. The emulsification process was optimized through proper selection of temperature, time and content of emulsifier. The resulted emulsions using the AEO series are more stable and have higher transparency than those using the OP series. We hence used the emulsifier that belonged to the AEO series for emulsification. The modified block silicon oil was emulsified and made up to different concentrations to be used as finishing solution to treat cotton fabrics. On the basis of the quality of finished textiles such as touch feeling, hydrophilia, washability, anti-yellowing as well as that of other application performance, it was found that an emulsion concentration of 30 g/L was the most suitable for the finishing process. Adopting this concentration, we generated emulsion of block silicone oil that was modified by 1,2-epoxyhexadecane as well as that of block silicone oil that was modified by epoxy polyether with 15 EO. It was observed that the former shows great anti-yellowing but poor hydrophilia ability while the latter have great anti-yellowing as well as hydrophilia ability. The finished products of both kinds have excellent touch feeling, and are similar in other application quality such as washability. In summary, the block silicone oil that was modified by 1,2-epoxyhexadecane has improved anti-yellowing ability, and the use of it results in fabrics with excellent touch feeling but poor hydrophilia ability. And the block silicone oil that was modified by epoxy polyether with 15 EO has improved anti-yellowing, and the use of it results in fabrics with excellent touch feeling and hydrophilia ability.
