Resin based composite material can be classified into two categories along the matrix resins: thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins. Thermosetting resins are widely used in the many fields because of its good processability and stable mechanical properties in high temperature. However, the low toughness and damage tolerance of thermosetting resins limits its extensive use. Thermoplastic resins can overcome these shortcomings, but the poor processability remains limitation for its extensive use.Polyether ether ketone(PEEK), as a typical high performance thermoplastic resin, has excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and thermal stability. PEEK has already been used in many fields such as aerospace, transport, and nuclear. However, due to the high solvent resistance and high melt viscosity of PEEK, short fiber and particle reinforced PEEK composites are main form of the PEEK composites. But continuous fiber reinforced PEEK composites with excellent mechanical properties have a greater practical applications in many fields. In this study, in order to combine the advantages of thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins and overcome their shortcomings, a series of poly(ether ether ketone)s with pendent phenylethynyl groups(Co-PEP-PEEKs) were synthesized. The results indicated that, these Co-PEP-PEEKs are soluble at room temperature in common organic solvents such as CHCl3, DMF and can be processed over a broad temperature range(from 230 ℃ to 340 ℃). Moreover, after crosslinking reaction, all these Co-PEP-PEEKs showed excellent solvent resistance, thermal stability and mechanical properties. Among them, 30%-PEP-PEEK exhibited best comprehensive properties and was selected as matrix. A solution processing technique was used to prepare composite prepregs. The disadvantages mentioned above were overcome successfully. Four parameters(hot pressing temperature, holding time, forming pressure and fiber content) were investigated. The solution impregnated carbon fiber reinforced 30%-PEP-PEEK composites showed excellent physical properties. The longitudinal flexural strength and longitudinal tensile strength reached to 1610 MPa and 1600 MPa and after the treatment with high energy radiation, the longitudinal flexural of composites can still reach to 1560 MPa.
