Resorcinol monobenzoate is one of the important kinds of light stabilizer. It is mainly used as UV absorber in the production of cellulose plastics and PVC.Based on the retrieval and review of the bibliographer, the original process for the preparation of resorcinol monobenzoate was evaluated. The novel process for preparation of resorcinol monobenzoate starting from benzoyl chloride and resorcinol by esterification, extraction and crystallization is studied. The influence of temperature, pH value, reaction time, resorcinol solution concentration and molar ratio of reactants on the yield of esterification was studied.The optimum reaction conditions were evaluated and selected as follows:the molar ratio of benzoyl chloride to resorcinol is 1.15:1, the pH value is 7.5, reaction temperature is 25℃ , reaction time is 1.5 hours, resorcinol solution concentration is 10%, and the yield of esters reaches about 88.6% under the optimum condition.The dosage of crystallization solvent and the temperature of crystallization were also investigated in this study. The experimental results showed that the yield of desired product can be obtained to 94% when the temperature of crystallization, and the ratio of solvent to reaction product are 30℃, and 2.5:1 respectively.Based on the experimental results, the rational scheme for the renovating of the process was discussed and the corresponding novel process was designed. Furthermore, the process data in the practical set test was accorded with those of in the experiments. There are several typical advantages of the novel process such as the better safety higher yield, stability of the process and the low cost of the product.The innovation for the process such as esterification extraction and crystallization were ensured industrially, that will be the theoretical basis for the industrial production of resorcinol monobenzoate.
