Tap is essential tool as machining medium and small size of internal thread, especially in the small size of thread machining. With the diversification of material development, how to improve the application of hard cutting material, promote tool cutting efficiency, and improve the taps’ service life becomes one of the current problem of mechanical processing. Using appropriate cryogenic process can improve the comprehensive cutting ability of HSS cutting tools have been recognized. At present, for the powder high speed steel cryogenic process study is less, especially the cryogenic treatment on powder high speed steel tap manufacturing technology.This topic to EM35 HSS tap as the research object, putting forward the technology of cryogenic treatment can improve the hardness of high speed steel tap, improve the distribution of carbide substrate, improve the cutting life of the tap, improve the cutting force of tap, and is being verified through experiments. According to orthogonal design experiment method to establish test model, we design test plan. first deep cryogenic treatment process of EM35 HSS Tab is studied by orthogonal design method; Hardness analysis and microstructure analysis is done through the sampling; before and after the study of cryogenic tap the change of the base material is studied; According to cutting test and the cutting torque test theory, tapping torque test is compared for the HSS Tab before and after cryogenic with the optimization cryogenic process. The rationality of new process is validated. The tap v-T curves and durability of the empirical formula of the optimized cutting tapping acquired by the cutting test. Optimizing the cryogenic process parameters in order to establish reasonable cryogenic technology, make the tap wear resistance increase, and improve cutting life extension.It can be shown from the results that the cryogenic treatment can effectively improve the finished product tap’s hardness, improve cutting performance, improve the tap cutting force, the cutting process is stable, tool wear is reduced.
