Trivalent chromium was an essential trace element for human and animal, which was one of the active component of glucose tolerance factor(GTF), and it had certain effects on carbohydrate, lipid, protein, nucleic acid metabolism. However, hexavalent chromium had toxicity which was identified as carcinogens. It could cause protein denaturalization, nucleic acid and nuclear protein precipitation, interfere enzyme system and induce mutagenic action, which caused the body poisoning. Therefore, the development of more new organic chromium products had a certain practical significance, but we should take the content of hexavalent chromium as one of the evaluation indicators for the quality of organic chromium. This paper detected the amount of hexavalent Chromium in products by spectrophotometric method. We used the extraction process to effectively separate hexavalent Chromium from the sample containing trivalent Chromium so as to monitor its content individually. Thereby this could eliminate the interference of the product color and trivalent Chromium on detection and improve the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis method, then get the credible results. The result of this study showed extraction colorimetry suitable for determinating hexavalent Chromium in products having trivalent Chromium. Through the experiment, we got the optimal determination condition:added 1 mL chromogenic reagent to the sample solution where the pH was 3.6, then added 2 mL complexing reagent after 5 min, and used 20 mL extractant to extract. After standing for 20 min, measured the absorbance of organic phase separated from it at 540 nm.The contents of the hexavalent chromium in threonine chromium, picolinate chromium, yeast chromium were in a safe allowable range or had not been detected.
