| Green copper pigments play a vital role in the painting progress of artworks and books. As time pasts, some of the copper compounds, such as verdigris, could fade obviously, corrode and degrade papers, consequently leads to the damage of papers. The mechanism of reaction between copper ion and cellulose is a combination of a series complicated reaction mechanism such as oxidation, catalysis, hydrolytic acidification and photochemical effect. As a result, Protection and recovery of damaged papers should based on the well understanding of corrosion mechanism and apply corrosion inhibition methods, for instance, deacidification or complexing of metal ions. This paper would choose two inhibitors,and evaluate the effectiveness of inhibition.The conclusions of this paper are as follows:1. First exploration of corrosion mechanismChinese traditional green copper pigments such as Shiqing and Shilv could fade obviously, corrode and degrade papers, consequently leads to the damage of papers. The Shiqing’s effect of corrosion is stronger than Shilv’s. This is because of hydroxyl oxidation to aldehyde, and to produse carboxylic acid.2. Evaluation of the effectiveness of inhibitionThis paper choose two inhibitors, sodium borax and calcium phytate. Sodium salt lead to the paper yellowing and calcium phytate lead to the acidification of paper. Therefore, suggestions are using those inhibitors cautiously and to control the storage environment. |
