Polymer microspheres have found lots of applications in many fields such as biomedical, clinical examinations, catalyst carriers, coating and ink additives, information storage materials, and so on The design and controlled fabrication of hollow polymer microspheres have received great interest due to their widely commercial applications. Different sizes of polymer particles have been successful obtained by various kinds of polymerization. In this paper, we report different approaches of diverse polymer microspheres, and then test the influences of fillers on the polysulfide sealant.The synthesis mechanism and process to prepare the hollow microspheres are examined and analyzed in this paper, the main research contents are as follows:The recipes of emulsion polymerization have diverse influences on the morphology of microspheres during the synthesis of hollow polymer microspheres by alkali/coo ling method. The results show the optimal formula to obtain best thermal stability and morphology:crosslinking agent weight ratio of DVB and EGDM is 1:1; mass ratio of shell monomer and core monomer is 1:1, and the weight ratio of hard monomer and soft monomer is 5:1.The urea treatment technology has a big effect on the morphology of hollow microspheres. Some factors in the progress of urea post-treatment such as urea amount, temperature and time, are examined in detail. The results indicate the best condition of urea treatment as follows:ethanol mass concentration of 0.054g/ml, and urea mass concentration of 0.054g/ml at95℃ for 5h.The properties test results of polysulfide sealant have indicated that polymer microspheres, which are used as fillers for sealants, can enhance mechanical properties of sealant, meanwhile decrease density of sealant obviously. With the increasing of the microspheres amount, the polysulfide rubber can achieve better mechanical property. After exceed a certain ratio, the effect on mechanical properties slowing down. Results show the hollow polymer microspheres with porous shell are the best filler.
