Allochromatic devices have attracted considerable interest because of their promising applications in information display, optical storage, etc. Prior examination of photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) have primarily focused on the tuning of the reflection wavelength, with particular attention paid to the magnitude of the wavelength shift of the reflection (tuning range). We will attempt to control the reflection wavelength of CLC using photoresponsive chiral compound. For this purpose, novel chiral complexs will be synthesized from photoresponsive chiral cyclic dopant. The complexs undergo cis-trans photoisomerization when exposed to UV or visible light illumination. Under the illumination of UV or visible light, the helical pitch of the CLC could be changed reversibly. Correspondingly, the reflection wavelength can be tuned. In this research, the effects of chiral molecular structure, ammonium ion, cis-trans photoisomerization on the properties of chiral complex will be systematically explored. The photoisomerization behavior of chiral complexs will be investigated as well as their spatial distribution under the illumination to clarify the mechanism of dynamic color in cholesteric liquid crystal. Conclusions will be made as to the principle and effectiveness of tuning reflection wavelength of CLC under light respectively. We also attempt to prepare cholesteric liquid crystal devices, which can tune the reflection wavelength by external stimuli, that may help to broaden the application of cholesteric liquid crystal in the information storage, display areas. The main contents are concluded as follows:(1) The synthesis, characterization and performance of the new photosensitive chiral cyclic molecules.(2) The cis-trans photoisomerization on the compound was investigated.(3) The performance of chiral complexs was investigated.(4) Prepared a cholesteric liquid crystal devices, which can tune the reflection wavelength by external stimuli.(5) Compared different gap of normal-mode PSCT and cholesteric liquid crystal devices on the photoelectric performance.
