Carbomer-based thickening systems has been widely used in inks, coatings,cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries due to their properties of high thickening andthixotropy. In the present article, Carbomer gel was compounded with nanosilica andoxidized polyethylene wax separately, and the effect laws of silica and oxidizedpolyethylene wax on the viscosity, pseudoplastic and thixotropy of Carbomer gelwere investigated.Firstly, the influence and interaction of fumed silica (FS) and precipitated silica(PS) on carbomer gel was studied separately, results show that FS and PS can bothenhance elasticity modulus, yield stress and thixotropy of Carbomer gel. When massfraction of nanosilica is≤4%, FS reinforce rheological properties more than PS; whenmass fraction of nanosilica is>4%, the contrary is the case. Interaction between FSand Carbopol is different from that between PS and Carbopol.The orthogonal experiment method was then been used to explore the influenceof oxidized polyethylene wax, GAET and sorbitol on the viscosity and pseudoplasticon Carbomer gel. Results show that oxidized polyethylene wax mainly reduceviscosity of carbomer gel, GAET contributes to enhancing pseudoplastic, and sorbitolcan improve viscosity better. The compound of Carbomer gel, oxidized polyethylenewax, GAET and sorbitol has both high thickening property and pseudoplastic.The two Carbomer-based thickening systems were finally been mixed withdirectly dispersed carbon black color paste E1800and carbon black color paste ML aswell as microcapsule black color paste ML separately, contrasting the variousperformance and stability of the six gel inks, we found that Carbomer gel modifiedwith nanosilica does not fit for gel ink due to its large particle size. And carbomer gelmodified with oxidized polyethylene wax was fit for carbon black color paste, and thegel ink can writes fluently for a long time without hat, but only when mixed withmicrocapsules carbon black ML paste can the gel ink has good stability.
