Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) magnetic microspheres and nanoparticles were prepared by solvent evaporation method, and the influence of magnetic particle/PHB ratio to their diameter and internal structure was researched. We found that PHA magnetic nanoparticles could work as a novel magnetic drug carrier. Magnetic particle content could decrease envelop ratios of rhodamine B in nanoparticles, but it did not affect the release of rhodamine B. This means that PHA magnetic nanoparticles and pure PHA nanoparticles have the same potential for drug releasing.Utilizing PHA particles surface binding proteins (e.g. PhaP) which is nonspecifically binding on hydrophobic materials PhaP, a novel platform was developed based on these proteins modified the surface of PHA magnetic microspheres and nanoparticles, which can be used in protein purification, separating cells, and so on. The results explained that more pure target protein can be obtained with poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) magnetic nanoparticles in magnet process, comparing with pure PHB nanoparticles without magnetic particles in centrifugalization. Moreover, PHB nanoparticles modified by PhaP-RGD could adhere to surface of rabbit blood vessel smooth muscle cells (RaSMCs) and mouse fibroblasts L929. The cells were guided to designated location, and proliferate sequentially. A platform based on modifying the surface of PHA magnetic microspheres and nanoparticles by proteins fusing PHA particles surface binding proteins was found and applicated in this study.
