The research of land use changes and influences of land use changes in regionalarea is not only the important part of Land use/land cover changes (LUCC) research,but also have significant of the sustainable land use in regional area. Nanjing islocated in the south west of the Jiangsu province with developed economy; the majorterrain contains low mountains, the Yangtze Riveris flowing through the city. Theinfluence of human activity on land become greater by the advancement ofurbanization, numbers of cultivated land had transformed into urban land, it brought aseries of social economy and environment problem in the promotion of economydevelopment that would put higher requirement in regional planning and land usemanagement.The land use dataset of Nanjing was built by Remote Sensing and GIS technologybased on the US Landsat TM images in2002,2009and2013. The spatial andtemporal characteristic of the land use changes in Nanjing was analyzed by statisticmethods and landscape pattern analysis method. Based that, the canonical correlationanalysis was used with the social-economy data in the research learned the influentialof influence factors on the different land use types. The main conclusions include:(1)The object-oriented classification had been used to process the remote sensingimages, the result of image classification had been processed by GIS technology, thedataset of land use was found by the extraction of the classification of the result.(2)The research analyzed the temporal-spatial and landscape pattern changes inthe past11years of Nanjing by Monitoring the land use changes of different periodsthe matrix of land use transition, comprehensive index of land use, edge density indexand Shannon’s diversity index. The result showed that the built-up and associated landincreased rapidly and cultivated land had a large number of reducing; the forest andwood area increased slowly cause the local policy, grassland area was reduced, thewater area had remained, the sum area of forest, grassland and water area is remainedabout30%of total area of the study area. There exist a large number cultivated landturned into grassland as urbanization and the labor force decreased in agriculture, at the same time there exist numbers of grassland and urban contracture landtransformed into cultivated land caused the land reclamation of agriculture policy.Because of that, there exist a complex transformation relationship between cultivatedland and grassland. A large number of cultivated lands had transformed into built-upand associated land and the comprehensive index of land use, shape index oflandscape, Shannon’s diversity index also increased, and the distribution of alllandscape became more even.(3)The article analyzed the various influence factors and its effect of land usechanges in Nanjing with the social and economic factors by canonical correlationanalysis based on land use changes dataset. The results showed that: the expansionofbuilt-up and associated land caused by incomes, GDPs and labor force in this city,most of them belong to economic. The effects of these factors are become weaker asthe increase of the urbanization level and the urbanization speed slowdown.Cultivated land and grass land had a great reduction because the economyactivities, the number of the cultivated are related to the number of the labor force inagriculture. The influences of economy activities and agriculture activities on forestand water area are weak, because of the location and the particularity of its ownattributes.
