Economic competition is industrial competition. Since the Reform and Openingup, Xinjiang’s economy embarked on a fast track, but the process of industrializationis lagging behind, with still many problems remained. For example, the extension ofindustry chains is not enough long and the development is unbalanced, the benefit isnot good. In order to conquer all kinds of difficulties that exist in industrydevelopment, accelerate the process of industrialization, it’s necessary to select anddevelop dominant industries, and through their driving effects to prompt the economicdevelopment of the total region. So we not only singled out the leading industries inXinjiang, but also analyzed their competitiveness. The paper first discusses the background and significance of the study, thendissertate the relevant concepts and theories of leading industries and industrialcompetitiveness, analyzing the necessary condition, choosing principles andconstraints of leading industries of a region, as well as the status quo and problem s ofXinjiang’s industrial economy. In the empirical analysis of selecting the leadingindustries, the paper constructs a theoretical model: we take the36industries includedas the sample and select10indicators, making quantitative analysis by using SPSSsoftware through factor analysis method. According to the ranking, Xinjiang’s currentleading Industries are: oil and gas exploration industry, petroleum processing andcoking and nuclear fuel processing industry, chemical materials and chemicalproducts manufacturing, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, electricity and heat production and supply industry, non-metallic mineral productsindustry. At last, the paper analyzed competitiveness of Leading Industries in Xinjiangfrom both horizontal and vertical. We can see Xinjiang’s developing achievements ofthe last decade in the vertical analysis, but the horizontal comparison analysis reflectsthe gap between Xinjiang and the national average.
