With rapid progress of modern technologies, products using speech technologies including transformation, storing, transmission, recognition and synthesis of speech data have become widely used. Speech recognition is one of most significant parts among these technologies. It is a human-computer interaction method of value that makes machines execute relevant operations after understanding natural human speech.The research and implementation of this road inquiry system is based on the theory of speech recognition technology and using HTK as its main experimental tool kit. HTK which consists of a set of library modules and tools is a toolkit for building and manipulating hidden Markov models. It is an ideal platform for speech recognition research as its relatively leading status in this field and is free to download for further development.Basic processing stages using HTK are discussed in this paper and the design and implementation of Chinese speech road inquiry system based on HTK is introduced. The system can recognize real-time mandarin speech input about road names and display results on computer screen in Chinese characters. It also supports recognition and testing of WAV speech files. This system which is simple and efficient meets high experimental requirements.As the importance of language models in speech recognition processing, theories and testing results of language models are covered in this paper.
