With the development of economy and the improvement of people’s living standards, the society’s demand for forest resources is growing. In order to guarantee the sustainable development of social economy and the forest resources, we must strengthen the protection and management of forest resources. Timber transportation management is an important part of the forest resources protection and management, and it plays an important role in the timber circulation management. The manual counting is a main method of log counting in the current timber transportation inspection, but this counting method influences the efficiency of timber transportation inspection seriously due to its low precision and efficiency. In view of the above problems, this paper establishes a timber transportation inspection system based on image recognition by applying the image recognition technology to the timber transportation inspection. The system can realize the automation of log counting and effectively improve the precision and efficiency of log counting.At first, this paper introduces the basic situation of timber transportation management in Fujian province. Then according to the current job requirements of the timber transportation management, this paper designs a timber transportation inspection system based on image recognition and analyzes each functional module of the system.In this paper, the design requirements and working principle of the log image recognition and counting subsystem are analyzed, and the software development platforms of the subsystem are introduced.In this paper, the development of digital image processing is introduced, and the preprocessing and morphological processing of digital image are analyzed in detail.According to the features of log cross section and the related principles of image recognition, this paper designs a log image recognition and counting algorithm. In order to separate the foreground and background of the log cross section image, a distribution model of pixel color values of log cross section is established according to the color features of log cross section. Then according to the shape features of log cross section, this paper uses the mathematical morphology to process the log cross section image and obtains the target areas of the image. Lastly, a judgment process of target area is designed to recognize and count the target area of log cross section, realizing the automatic counting of log.
