Compared with traditional networks, there are far more devices of diverse hardware and software platforms and many of them running in unattended mode most of the time. The storage and computing capabilities of those devices are often more limited compared with those from traditional networks and form networks of their own without interaction activities with each other or other parts of the grand Internet. Under such circumstances, the services that those devices are capable of cannot be utilized fully due mostly to the confinement of their proprietary communication mechanisms. This has to be changed by the upcoming vision of ubiquitous Web of Things in which smart devices present everywhere will be merged into the World Wide Web with their inter-incompatibilities abstracted away. To realize extending the servicing capability and range of those data source networks and make the interactions between people and devices possible, a new architecture for the aggregation and openness of those networks has to be devised and it has to have the property of easily deployable and well adop table because only in that way new types of innovative applications can be supported and promoted.Major work in this paper can be summarized as the following. We proposed a novel, loosely-coupled, scalable architecture for the purpose of aggregation and openness of ubiquitous devices after carefully examining the differences between devices’ ability and application models of both traditional and ubiquitous computing environment. A large number of data source layer devices can be adapted into the open platform and then their services can be exported with unified interfaces to support the development of new kinds of smart applications leveraging the smart context information provided by the ubiquitous devices and massive on-demand servicing capabilities of cloud computing platform. We then designed a novel address auto-configuration scheme for the environment of omnipresent data source networks. The scheme is mainly for tree networks that are based on IEEE802.15.4standard. In accordance with the communication requirement of the application, three types of network addresses can be used, i.e. local address, intra-network address, inter-network address. Local address is the basic unit and intra-network address can be formed collectively from them. Just as indicated by its name, inter-network address is for communication with other networks, e.g. the Internet. In addition, intra-network addresses are compiled with some form of the network topology information and can help the routing of packets within the network. Qualified with these features, the proposed scheme is supposed to be both scalable and adaptable for many types of communication scenarios. Finally, we developed and deployed a sample implementation to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the two proposed methods. System requirement, system design considerations, and component functions will be detailed in the paper. The project is part of "System Architecture, Key Technologies, and Verification Systems for the Business Environment of Web Based Ubiquitous Network" from "National Science and Technology Major Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China".
