As the emerging electro-optical technology device, light curtains are widely used insafety/security relevant spaces and measurement, owing to the advantages of simplestructure and high resolution. For the monitoring of especially large areas with highsensitivity, light curtains with a vast number of light beams and receivers are needed.Disadvantages are high costs, reduced reliability and low flexibility. In addition, safetylight barriers only pay attention to the involvement of the unknown objects, ignoring theposition detection, which is an important demand. This paper has developed a uniquelight curtain system to overcome the disadvantages mentioned above. The main researchwork and innovation are as follows:First, by comparing the domestic and international current situation of light curtainand analyzing the current characteristics and defects of the device, a position sensorwhich based on fluorescent waveguides is put forward for the light curtain detectionsystem.Second, the experimental device system has been designed and built based on relatedtheory and the overall planning of the experimental device. Mechanical part containsexperimental device’s frame and the fixed structure of position sensor and lasers. On thepart of hardware, mini2440development board is used as the main control panel.Moreover lasers and acquisition card control circuit module have been designed and thedesign of the program of ARM control system and PC applications has been completed.At last, using C language and Matlab to simulate the detecting system, and verifiedthe feasibility of the system due to the expected results which has been got. By movingthe real objects of a fixed size in the detection area, the experimental results were gotand compared with the simulation results. The experimental results show that, thisdesign basically can achieve the expected demand basically.The main measuring errorsof the system comes from the defects of mechanical structure and the problems ofuniformity and instability of the lasers, etc.The detection light curtain system based on fluorescence waveguides which has beenbuilt meets the basic requirements. With the follow-up work to improve its accuracy,this will allow the use in not only security supervision but also in the fields of touchscreen.
