With the rapid development of image processing technology and the computer vision, more and more outdoor video systems are applied to people’s daily life, such as automatic driving, target tracking and video surveillance. The poor visibility in foggy environment has brought many problems to the images got by the video system, such as low contrast, indistinct and color distortion, which affects the stability of the video system seriously. So it is very necessary to realize the video defogging to get clear images.In this paper, much research about image defogging has been done at first, then a video defogging technology based on adaptive tolerance is proposed. First, the transmission of each video frame is estimated according to the dark channel prior, and then it is fast refined by the guided filter for restoration. If a large bright region exists in the video frame, the transmission of these regions will be corrected according to the adaptive tolerance, which avoids the color distortion in the video defogging.Video with dynamic background and video with static background are processed in different ways according to their own features in this paper, which greatly improves the rate of defogging. The objective evaluation is given to the processed video at last. Experimental results show that the algorithm has a strong applicability, and it can be further used for many applications, such as outdoor surveillance, remote sensing and intelligent vehicles.
