In recent years, the multimedia industry is developing at an amazing speed; with the popularity of the internet, the expansion of bandwidth and the gradual mature of image and video compression technology, the multimedia technology has become the main stream of computing. At present, a majority of time and energy of computer is consumed in processing multimedia applications. With the application of multimedia becoming more and more widespread, higher requirements are put forward in the processing ability of computers. Although the performance of computer processing has been improved to a great extend, the computing ability of computer system is meeting great challenges in processing multimedia applications.This paper studies multimedia applications on the above situation. Simple Scalar, a test tool, and Media-Bench, a typical multimedia application, are introduced to make analysis and testing of multimedia applications from a macroscopic view and then deepen into a microcosmic domain to analyze and study their kernel circle and key functions, so that improvements and solutions will be put forward to making preparations for comprehensively accelerating computer speed of processing multimedia applications. The specific study and conclusions can be summarized as follows:(1)13representative applications in Media-Bench are analyzed;(2) The macroscopic characteristics of Media-Bench are analyzed, according to which the system are optimized to obtain the following two models:computation processing model and storage cache model, which can provide certain technical accumulation and references to the designing of multimedia processor in the future.(3) At a micro level, the key functions and kernel circles of Media-Bench are extracted and analyzed, and a deeper classification study of kernel circles is carried out.(4) Based on circle characteristics of multimedia applications, PAT, a new tool of application character analysis, is constructed to remedy the faults in traditional application testing tool. Meanwhile, Simulator SimpleScalar2.0is improved to meet the needs of testing of multimedia applications.
