Geomagnetic is the magnetic field which around the earth, it is a stable field which have specific strength and angle. Plenty of evidences have implied that creatures like fish, pigeons and sea turtles utilize geomagnetic information for long-distance migration and homing. As a new navigation method, magnetic navigation can be used as an assist method for main navigation method like GPS navigation and inertial navigation. Development of high-precision magnetic field sensor provides the technical foundation for magnetic navigation. Magnetic navigation has a very wide range of applications and market prospects in indoor navigation and other special situationThe essay introduces the basic principles of using magnetic field for orientation, studies the possibility and principle of using of two magnetic field elements for navigation and positioning in the same plane. This essay creatively presents using the angle data between the total magnetic field and a specific spatial orientation as a navigation-based approach. The essay put out a pure magnetic navigation method based on extended Kalman filter. Different with traditional method, this method does not need pre-stored data, and only reply on real-time measured data. The essay carries out simulation experiments using Matlab to prove the navigation algorithm. Simulation show that the algorithm can deal with a range of noise and interference. The essay also puts out a system method for high precision magnetic sensor and designs a scheme for indoor navigation using the algorithm. At last, the essay discusses on the application and prospects for the magnetic navigation method and put out the potential research on this issue.
